Yes, it may be snowing outside. And when you live in a house that is barely single-glazed, cold food might not be top of your list.
But icecream comes pretty high up on mine all year round, and luckily for us there are some GREAT dairy-free choices out there.
When I first heard that there was allergy friendly ice on the scene, I was more sceptical than excited. I stubbornly thought that taking the dairy out of icecream would be like making an omelette without an egg (for the record I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work).
Oh how wrong I was.
Not only is there a scope of prices and flavours, they really do taste great. My family don’t even bother to buy their own dairy-heavy icecream now – they opt for mine every time.
First up is Swedish Glace – ‘Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert’ (yes, that’s icecream to you and me). It’s gluten-free, lactose-free, cholesterol, GM-free and Kosher-approved, it is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. My favourite flavour is Smooth Vanilla – but they also offer Wild Blueberry; Rich Chocolate; Raspberry and Neapolitan.
And hey, if you want to get wild, try the Pearl Lollies or Peak Lollies (basically a dairy-free Cornetto. YES, they went there. And aren’t we glad they did?)
Next in to the mix is Booja Booja’s ‘Alternative to Dairy Ice Cream’. I was bought this as a present when I was having a bad week and it absolutely stopped me whining. Because I literally could not stop eating it. This weighs in at a higher price point – but it is easy to see and taste why.
The ingredients include cashews, agave syrup, and ‘pure water from reverse osmosis’ – and it’s free from all the usual nasties, is mostly raw, and all organic. With names like ‘Keep Smiling Vanilla M’Gorilla’ and ‘Fesity Winjin Ginger’ (my personal favourite), what’s not to love? I promise, you get what you pay for.
Hitting the mark on price, taste, and damn sexy packaging is Bessant and Drury’s ‘Luxury Frozen Dessert’. With each of the four flavours - Vanilla, Lemon, Strawberry and Chocolate – their recipes are based around the wonder-food coconut, which means their icecream doesn’t contain any rubbish, and tastes just dreamy. Creamy dreamy.
Oh and before you go – if you like a cone for your cream, look no further than here.

I am soooooo looking forward to trying these. Thanks for the tips! x
Great stuff! I would gladly venture out in the treacherous conditions to grab some of these bad boys x
It tastes better than the real thing. FACT.
